Holy Spirit

This is a guarantee from the Word. The Father assures us that if we ask Him for the Spirit, He will give us the Spirit.

Luke 11:11-13 NIV "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

  • We do not need to worry about receiving something other than what we asked for. If we ask the Father for the Holy Spirit, He doesn’t give us a snake or a stone . . . He gives us the Holy Spirit.

  • On the Day of Pentecost, all the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and all spoke in unknown and unlearned languages.

  • They used their tongues, mouths, vocal cords and lips to form the words. In other words, THEY did the speaking, and the Holy Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

  • In a few moments, when we begin to pray, you will begin speaking in a language you have never learned. It’s OK to be a little nervous, but try to relax. This is the most NATURAL experience for a Christian, because we serve a supernatural God.

  • Remember that you will be talking to God in a new language. It might sound odd to you at first, but don’t be self-conscious. You will be speaking to God, so CONCENTRATE on Him, not on the words that you will be saying.

  • While I am praying for you to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit, I will be praying in an unknown language too . . . and I will be listening to hear when you begin to pray in an unknown language.

  • It will be you doing the speaking . . . you won’t be in a trance or anything like that . . . you will be in complete control of yourself. When you are ready, stop speaking English, take a step of faith and lift your voice and begin to speak in a new language as the Spirit gives the ability.

Pray this prayer, “Jesus, baptize me in the Holy Spirit, and I will speak in tongues.”

Notes: Continue to pray for them to receive. Such prayer does not need to be loud to be effective. If the candidate does not receive his prayer language, assure him that God is NOT withholding it from him . . . but that he may need more understanding before he will let himself receive. In either case, give a booklet on the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. Encourage them to seek the Baptism on there own. Many have been filled with the Spirit in the solitude of their prayer closet or on their commute to work.
